Financial Education Plan

Description :

The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, the Bank of Spain and the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) are collaborating to promote financial education in the education system, one of the main projects of the Financial Education Plan. In addition, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and the regional ministries of the autonomous communities, the Financial Education Plan launches its Financial Education school programme each academic year, which schools and educational centres throughout Spain can join free of charge, on a voluntary and flexible basis. The content works on the thematic areas established by the PISA programme in financial competence: money and transactions, planning and management of personal finances, risk and profit, and the financial outlook. The Financial Education Plan is an initiative promoted since 2008 by the Banco de España and the CNMV to foster financial education among the Spanish population, with a network of 41 collaborators from various fields committed to the development of this objective.

Is financial education a pending subject in the Spanish education system?

Description :

This article uses data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for the case of Spain to test whether the training that secondary school students receive in this area is making a difference. The results obtained show that the implementation of this competence in the Spanish education system is still in its early stages and lacks a uniform model. Although caution must be exercised due to the singularities of the treatment of this competence in Spain, this paper shows that some forms of financial literacy training may be having a negative association with students' financial competence, while others are not significant. All this reveals the need to restructure the way financial education is delivered in Spain.
